Prospect Weekly: Snipe City

Only goals need apply.

This week’s installment could have been called Nikolai Kovalenko Part II as he graciously provided highlights as the rest of the Colorado Avalanche prospect group gets going on their seasons.

A tough 4-3 loss in overtime for Ak Bars but Kovalenko provided this highlight where he created a rush chance and just out-worked his way to the net.

And another goal, why not? Kovalenko fights through a check here to surprise the netminder. Unfortunately Ak Bars lost this game again 4-3 in overtime.

Finally, for the Prospect Weekly hat trick Kovalenko converted in a 6-2 Ak Bars win on another net front special. He now has 10 points in 17 games, which is one shy of his 2020-21 season total and good for second on the team in scoring. It seems to move to Ak Bars was a good decision for Kovalenko.

Meanwhile, Oskar Olausson was gone too soon after having an impressive camp with the Avalanche and wasted no time getting on the board for the Barrie Colts in their season opener, scoring the first goal of the campaign no less and ended up the only goal in a 4-1 loss. He also added six shots on goal to give an indication of how much he loves to shoot and the potential for offense that Olausson should be able to create. Unsurprisingly Olausson added another goal and six shots on net in the follow-up game of the weekend, which the Colts unfortunately dropped as well.

Colby Ambrosio didn’t waste any time starting his season either getting Boston College on the board in their first game of the season. He does a good job anticipating and was in the right spot for a rebound. The game would end in a 2-2 tie.

And lastly, one other Avalanche prospect for tallied their team’s season opening goal. Nicky Leivermann not only scored on a nice wrist shot high in the offensive zone as seen below but also added an assist and was named first star of the game. The Irish picked up their first victory as well in a 5-2 final score
