Prospect Weekly: Free Shane Bowers

As the season rolls on for Colorado Avalanche prospects, the decision point on many of their next steps looms large on the horizon. In the meantime: some highlights.

Shane Bowers scored his first goal of the season for the Colorado Eagles in a 2-1 loss to Ontario. Hopefully someone was watching as it was during a 6v5 in an effort to tie the game. After getting the Eagles within one Bowers again scored on a net front scramble with four seconds left in regulation which would have sent the game to overtime. However the officials ruled someone had touched the puck during the scramble with a high stick so no dice. Bowers scored on a 5v3 the following night on a very similar type shot as well. He’s played every forward position through five games now and is whittling time away waiting for his NHL debut.

One other notable from the Eagles has been the play of Trent Miner who earned his first professional win, and the only Eagles win, in a 4-2 victory over Ontario. The plan wasn’t even to have him see any action but with the Avalanche goalie crisis he had to take the net. Miner gave the team a chance to win with a .924 save percentage through three games but the team let him down in the fourth in a blow out vs. San Diego. His calm and composed demeanor has been a welcome surprise at the professional level.

Justin Barron back in action from a two-game suspension provided this game tying assist on a shot through traffic from the blue line. His confidence and physicality has openly grown since returning for the second half of the season. Barron was also presented in the last week with the Gervais-Munger Award for academic perseverance.

Alex Newhook has singlehandedly rescued the Boston College power play with his fourth goal on the year, all of which have come on the man advantage. Here he unleashes his superb wrist shot to put the game away. In the previous game Newhook’s power play goal stood as the game winner.

Not to be left out of the party, Colby Ambrosio scored a goal of his own over the weekend in a sweep of Maine. Here he cleans up the loose change in front of the net for his seventh strike of the season.

Here is the weekly Sampo Ranta goal highlight as he attempts to catch Cole Caufield for the NCAA lead. With his 15th of the season Ranta is four back with a handful of games left to play. He is deadly on the rush and uses his speed to convert on a great pass.
