GWG Challenge: Opening Week 2026 – 2027

The return of Colorado Avalanche hockey is upon us, Avs fans!  That can mean only one thing!

Our Game-Winning Goal Challenge is back for another action-packed season!

Once again, the Avs will face the Los Angeles Kings in the nightcap of a triple-header season opener!

For those of you who are new to the game (and those of you coming back for another run!), here’s how the game works.

A series of questions will be posted at the beginning of each week throughout the regular season, ranked in order of point value.  The breakdown is as follows:

• Game-Winning Goal Questions (5 Points for each correct guess).  One answer per question.
• Two Multiple Choice Questions (3 Points for the first question, 2 Points for the second question).  One answer per question.
• One Multiple Choice Question (1 Point awarded for each correct answer, 1 Point deducted for each incorrect answer). No limit on answers.
• Discord-Only Bonus Question (Varying point values weekly.).  This question is only available on the #gwg-challenge on the Burgundy Review Discord Server.  One answer per participant.

Be on the lookout for special point bonuses throughout the season!

• Coach’s Challenge: Using the Coach’s Challenge will award a free five (5) point bonus during a single week of play.  Players opting to use their Coach’s Challenge must indicate its use when submitting their answers for a given week.  Every participant will have one (1) Coach’s Challenge to use at their discretion this season.  The initial Coach’s Challenge can be used once, but more can be earned throughout the season.  All Coach’s Challenges must be used before the end of the regular season.
• Double Down: This bonus doubles the point total earned for the Discord-Only Bonus Question when active.  Participants will have their point total doubled for correctly answering the Discord-Only Bonus Question, but they must opt in for the Double Down Bonus to qualify!
• DOPS (Department of Player Shenanigans) Review (NEW!): Missed out on submitting your answers for the week?  Don’t want to see a zero on the cumulative GWG points leaderboard?  You can request to have an average of your cumulative point total as a one-time substitute on the cumulative GWG points leaderboard during the week in question.  This request will not apply to the GWG weekly or monthly leaderboards.
• Hat Trick Bonus (NEW!): Any player listed for the single point multiple-choice question will earn three (3) points instead of the single point if that player scores a hat trick at any point during the week.  If that player’s hat trick includes a Game-Winning Goal, the Hat Trick Bonus will also add three (3) points to that participant’s GWG point total for that selected game, even if they are not selected to score the GWG in that game!  Here are a few examples of how the Hat Trick Bonus will work.
  • Example: Cale Makar scores a hat trick in one game.  He is listed as one of the players who scores a point during the week.  Three (3) points will be awarded for his hat trick instead of one as part of the third multiple choice question.  He was not selected to score a GWG for the week, but the participant will earn three (3) GWG points for the game in question.
  • Example: Nathan MacKinnon scores a hat trick in one game.  He is listed as one of the players who scores a point during the week.  Three (3) points will be awarded for his hat trick instead of one as part of the third multiple choice question.  He was selected to score a GWG for the week, but not in the game he actually scored the hat trick.  The participant will earn three (3) GWG points for the game in question.
  • Example: Jaden Schwartz scores a hat trick in one game.  He is listed as one of the players who scores a point during the week.  Three (3) points will be awarded for his hat trick instead of one as part of the third multiple choice question.  He scored the GWG in the game he actually scored the hat trick.  The participant will earn eight (8) GWG points for the game in question.

Point totals will be tabulated at the end of each week and published on our Discord server, with a new series of questions to follow at the beginning of each week.

The top winner will receive accolades on the Burgundy Review Discord server based on the following:

• Weekly winner(s): username tag and color upgrade for the week following a win.
• Monthly winner(s): username tag and color upgrade for the week following a win in the preceding month.
• Regular season Champion(s): username tag and color upgrade throughout the postseason and offseason, and into the first week of the following season.
• Postseason MVP (awarded during postseason play only): username tag and color upgrade throughout the offseason, and into the first week of the following season.
• Game-Winning Goal Challenge Champion: username tag and color upgrade throughout the offseason, and through the entire following season.
