Prospect Weekly: The Sampo Ranta Show

Thank the Colorado Eagles for rescuing a quiet week in the Colorado Avalanche prospect universe. However night one of their series with the Stockton Heat ended in their own forgettable 3-2 overtime loss.

The fireworks would return the following night in a 5-1 drubbing of the AHL Western Conference’s best team and led by the Avalanche’s top prospects.

Justin Barron got things started with this nifty move and finish in a portion of 4v4 to give the Eagles a two goal lead. His ability to find open space in the offensive zone is very underrated.

Then it was time for Sampo Ranta to find the back of the net in not one but two highlight reel individual efforts and suddenly the score was 4-1 and the rout was on. Ranta had been getting more and more settled back into the AHL game, using his frame more and creating chances around the net. These two goals will give him some reinforcement and a confidence boost that he can be an impact player at any level.

Shoutout to Alex Beaucage for getting the play started on Ranta’s first goal. While Beaucage’s six points on the year won’t jump out of the boxscore he’s been probably the most consistently impactful Avalanche prospect in the AHL thus far this season showing a brand of tenacity that wasn’t expected to emerge early in his pro career.

And here’s Ranta’s second goal which might be even more impressive.

Over in the OHL Oskar Olausson put up a goal and two assists over the weekend. The goal was a nice onetimer on the power play with the great shot he possesses. The assist seen below was a slick secondary helper on the power play and Olausson added an assist on an empty net goal in a 4-2 win as well.
