Prospect Weekly: Trophy Hunting

It was a remarkable week for Cale Makar. First he contributed an assist on the power play seen below in a 4-3 overtime victory against Denver in the opening round of the NCAA Frozen Four. The following day Makar was honored as the 39th recipient of the Hobey Baker award for the best player in college hockey. Then in a hard fought national championship game against Minnesota-Duluth the Cinderella run for UMass ended in a 3-0 defeat and Makar’s final tally for the season rests at 49 points in 41 games including 16 goals. To complete the weekend Makar signed his Entry Level Contract with the Colorado Avalanche and is expected to make his NHL debut in the first round series against the Calgary Flames.

Nikolai Kovalenko has his own trophy to win currently in the MHL finals with Loko. In game one against Avto he contributed two assists in a 4-2 victory using his vision on a pair of beautiful cross-ice passes seen below. Currently Loko holds a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series.

The Oshawa Generals continue on their quest to cause an upset and move on to the eastern conference finals in the OHL. Brandon Saigeon helped Oshawa do just that in a 3-1 win to take game five and a 3-2 series lead over Niagara. He tossed this slick pass for an assist on the game winning goal seen below and now has 11 points in the postseason.

The Colorado Eagles entered the weekend just one point ahead of Tucson for the final wild card spot in the Pacific division. All they needed to do was hold pace with Tucson over the final two games of the season. After Tucson won and Colorado lost 3-1 on Friday evening this needing both a win and Tucson loss to remain one point ahead.

Miraculously that did just happen as the Eagles held on for a 3-2 final and then watched as Tucson fell 4-3 in their final game. Martin Kaut helped make that miracle happen as he scored the important opening goal for the Eagles seen below on a rebound play.

The Eagles continue their season an open their playoff series at home on Friday, April 19th against Bakersfield.
