Prospect Weekly: Jost Deserts

The week kicked off with the Eagles traveling to California for four games and the first match was in Stockton where they’ve had a lot of trouble on previous trips. Spencer Martin was up to the task making 34 saves including this one seen below to get the game to overtime and eventually a 2-1 shootout victory. As per usual Michael Joly and Martin Kaut converted in the shootout plus AJ Greer added the shootout game winner and the lone goal in regulation.

The following game in Bakersfield wasn’t nearly as successful for the Eagles in a 7-2 loss. However, AJ Greer kept the scoring going adding the only two goals for the Eagles in the losing effort including this goal seen below on a snipe of a shot which provided Jost his first point in an Eagles uniform.

For the biggest highlight of the week, Spencer Martin made an incredible 68 saves in a 4-0 shutout win over the Ontario Reign on Friday evening. Martin has been a bit down on his luck the last couple years but this was a big night for him and brings him to a 5-7 record with a .905 save percentage. Martin was not the only story this evening as Tyson Jost finally got a goal on the board as seen below plus a Mark Alt natural hat trick (really).

In the next evening’s rematch the Eagles were not as successful falling by a score of 5-3 after starting off with a two goal lead. Those goals belonged to Martin Kaut scored as seen below on a sharp tap in at the net front and Tyson Jost scored two one-timer power play goals. Perhaps something to keep in mind when each continue on at the NHL level in the near future. If this is the end of Jost’s stint in the AHL he finishes with three goals and an assist in six games.

Brandon Saigeon became the 7th player in the OHL to break the 70 point barrier with this assist on the power play seen below as Oshawa fell 5-3 to London. He just had a 12 game point streak snapped but that drought didn’t last long and Saigeon still sits in the top 10 of league scoring.

Last but never least, Cale Makar just keeps trucking along in his sophomore season at UMass with a goal in the empty net seen below and an assist in a 4-2 win over Maine. Makar was held off the scoresheet the following evening but contributed nine shots on goal in a 4-3 loss in the rematch with Maine. He now has 29 points in 24 games with nine goals as Makar continues to build his Hobey Baker resume.
