Who Wore it Best: Number 34

In the history of the Colorado Avalanche only four players have chosen to wear the number 34 on their backs.

Aaron MacKenzie (GP 5, 0G, 0A, 0 PIM)

Aaron MacKenzie was an undrafted defenseman who played for the University of Denver before signing with the St Louis Blues. In July 2008 MacKenzie signed as a free agent with the Colorado Avalanche and spent most of his time with the Monsters. He appeared in five games with the Avalanche and was kept off the scoreboard. He has since retired from hockey.

Kurt Sauer (GP 153, 2G, 16A, 108 PIM)

Kurt Sauer was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche 88th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He and the Avalanche didn’t agree to a contract in 2002 and he went and signed to play for the Mighty Ducks instead. In February 2004 the stay at home defenseman was traded by the Ducks back to Colorado in exchange for Martin Skoula. He remained on the team until he signed as a free agent with the Coyotes in 2008. Sauer was forced to retire due to a concussion.

Carl Soderberg (GP 239, 34G, 68A, 80 PIM)

Carl Soderberg was drafted by the St Louis Blues 49th overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He signed with the Blues in 2006, but was assigned to their minor league affiliate. He was homesick and was loaned to Malmö in the SEL. In 2007 while playing for Malmö he suffered a serious injury to his eye – a detached retina. He signed with Boston in 2013. He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for the previousle owner Boston sixth-round pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. He is the current wearer of the number 34.

Daniel Winnik (GP 143, 16G, 28A, 100 PIM)

Daniel Winnik was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes 265th overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Winnik was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in June 2010 for a fourth round draft pick. He had 16 goals 3 of them were shorthanded goals and 2 were power play goals. In February 2012 he was part of the trade that landed him in San Jose for Jamie McGinn, Mike Connolly and Michael Sgarbossa. Winnik is currently looking for a new home for the upcoming season.
