Prospect Weekly: Asset Hound

Conor Timmins is continuing to rack up points in advance of being named to and his impending departure to World Junior Championship camp with Team Canada. He’s the master of the assist in his team’s wildly successful puck possession system but in Sault Ste. Marie’s 7-5 win over Peterborough last week Thursday, Timmins decided to get in on the goal scoring with not one but two highlight reel goals. He usually gets his goals from a big shot on the blue line but decided to bust out the dangles this evening.

Timmins decided he wasn’t done scoring, probably wishing he had the hat trick the night before, and scored in OT to defeat Kingston 3-2 on Friday night. It was a six point week for Timmins as his Greyhounds increased their record to 23-3-2 and are currently on a 14 game winning streak.

Since it is now December, also a reminder that Timmins must sign this month if his contract is to slide next year. NHL CBA 9.1(d)(i)

Another defenseman wanted to get in on the goal scoring this week as Josh Anderson lights the lamp for the first time this season on a heavy shot from the blue line in Prince George’s 5-3 loss to Vancouver. Anderson added another assist over the weekend and is now on a point streak.

Guess who else is back and scoring goals? Yes, that’s Denis Smirnov, who has recovered from his illness and returned to the lineup just in time for Penn State to defeat Ohio State 4-0 with this nice snipe on the power play.

Shane Bowers had himself a nice weekend scoring two goals and adding two assists as well in BU’s series against Boston College. He’s now 3rd in the nation for Freshman with eight goals and has joined Makar in the 3 shots per game club. Here’s a nice deflection goal as the only score in the 4-1 loss.

Cale Makar has has been getting his points through assists. One this past weekend on a slick drop pass in UMass’ 4-2 win over UConn in which Makar also had 4 shots on goal and 16 shot attempts.

It was a big night on Saturday in San Antonio where JC Beaudin and Julien Nantel took over the game and the Rampage secured a come from behind 4-3 OT victory over the Iowa Wild, which snapped a four game losing skid. The pair has been playing together ever since their return from the Colorado Eagles and certainly made the most use of their ice time.

Beaudin scored his first AHL goal to cut the Iowa lead to 3-2 and then assisted on the winning goal in OT. Beaudin also got the momentum shifting in the right direction with a big shift before Nantel scored his beauty with just over eight minutes to go to tie the game.

This should be a huge lesson to the organization that playing the young guys can make a difference. It was just one game and it’s expected for young players to have ups and downs but this game was another penalty fest which was earmarked to go in the defeat column and the young guys were the ones who turned it around.

CHL Update: 

As mentioned above, the Greyhounds are on an incredible run and vault to the top of the rankings. The Wheat Kings had an impressive road trip and move up as well.
