Prospect Weekly: Makar Makes his Mark

Cale Makar got his season off on the right note by scoring two goals and a total of four points (all seen below) in his first game with six shots on goal in UMass’ 6-1 win over RPI. For his efforts, Makar won the Hockey East player of the week award and points to an exciting season ahead for him.

 

Other NCAA prospects got on the board as well with Cam Morrison scoring a goal for Notre Dame in a 6-6 tie with Mercyherst. He added five shots on goal as a hopeful sign he can fill the net a bit more this year. Shane Bowers also fired seven shots on goal and converted his first tally on the season to tie the game for Boston University game in an eventual 5-3 defeat to Minnesota State. The highlight gods were not favorable this week for either player but there will be more in due time.

 

Nikolai Kovalenko always seems to insert himself into the weekly conversation with a goal at just the right time. This one in a 3-0 win for Lokomotiv over Dynamo Moscow and should easily be his best thus far. His entire shift is included below just to show what a tenacious pitbull of a player Kovalenko is. He makes this goal start to finish and is now up to four on the year while he remains in the KHL.

 

Nick Henry was the overtime hero in Regina’s victory 4-3 over Calgary with his goal as seen below. He added two assists as well for his second three-point game of the season and brings his current point streak to five games.

 

Moving on to the Colorado Eagles, the highlights begin at Igor Shvyrev with another clutch third period goal. This one seen below was converted with his quick shot off of a rebound. His joyful celebrations are also such fun.

 

Logan O’Connor then seals the deal with a breakaway tally for his first professional goal in a 2-1 win for the Eagles in their first game back in San Antonio and also what would be Colorado’s first AHL victory.

 

The Eagles kept the party going the following night when JC Beaudin scored scored his first goal of the season on a net front rebound. He’s been given a real role thus far this season and it’s nice to see Beaudin rewarded for his efforts.

 

Nicolas Meloche also enjoyed his return to San Antonio with his second goal of the season on another great wrist shot. It should be clear at this point he is an integral part of the lineup. The Eagles won 3-1 and swept the weekend. Pavel Francouz was also solid in net starting both games, giving up only two goals total and currently rocks a .966 save percentage.
