Who Wore it Best: Number 49

A lightly used number in Colorado Avalanche history, the number 49 has a chance to become something special to the franchise.

Serge Aubin (1999-2000)

A seventh round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1994, Aubin arrived in Colorado via the minor league system. A long minors career in the IHL, ECHL and finally AHL with the Hershey Bears would get Aubin eventually a look with the Avalanche. He would play in three different seasons also wearing 44 and then later 10 after he came back to the team in 2002 after a stint with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Aubin would then depart in 2003 to the Atlanta Thrashers in the waiver draft. In total, Aubin would score seven points in 82 games for the Avalanche and in the special 49 he scored three points in 15 games.

Samuel Girard (2017-Present)

As the first fruit of the Matt Duchene trade, Girard made immediate impact with the Avalanche. The 47th overall selection of the Nashville Predators in 2016, Girard was primed to get a long look in Nashville before heading to Colorado just five games into his NHL career. There he established himself as an NHL player and participated in all 68 games for the Avalanche after the trade plus three post season contests. Girard was a revelation in what he could do defensively and in moving the puck at just 19 years-old plus the slick passing and playmaking skills to go along with the maturity in his game. Girard would score 20 points in burgundy in addition to the three in Nashville for a respectable 23 point rookie campaign. Girard is just scratching the surface of what he can bring to the Avalanche and should wear burgundy for a long time.

Girard’s preferred number was 94 as he wore it in his junior career with the Shawinigan Cataractes and also in Nashville. Even in his brief stint with the Mikwaukee Admirals in the AHL Girard would don the number 94. Upon his arrival to the Avalanche the number 94 wasn’t available as it was temporarily occupied by Andrei Mironov so Girard chose to reverse the numbers and selected 49. It remains to be seen if Girard sticks with the 49 or jumps on the 94 now that it’s available. Either way he will certainly make whichever number he wears an icon in Avalanche history.
